With all the recalls that have been reported in the news and here in this blog, are you planning on changing what toys and other gifts you are buying this holiday season? The latest buzz says more toy recalls are coming. There may already be toys on the shelves that will be recalled, as more testing is ongoing by Mattel and the other toymakers. Here's my list:
Videos/DVD's - this is always on my list because there's always at least three videos the kids want each Christmas. This may increase to make up for Santa's toy reduction.
Money - I try to tell the relatives every year to fund the kids' college fund - it's going to be coming fast - and we have the accounts set up via Upromise, savings bonds and we're doing Florida prepaid college for both of them - ANY of them could use $$$$.
Leapster - I really like this educational toy - we first had LeapPad handed down to the kids, but the newer format which is more like a handheld video game is much better - smaller, better graphics, and great programs! We'd like more cartridges please!
Art Supplies - You can never go wrong with art supplies for any occasion, in my opinion. They encourage creativity and it's non-video fun for anyone. Butterfly is starting to paint with acrylics and we could use some more canvasses.
Clothes - but kid's will never ask for them. Don't you remember opening the box with that sweater and throwing it down with disgust "clothes!" Well, we did. But my kids would like Hannah Montana and High School musical related clothing - shirts, jackets, etc. I'll bet other kids do too.
CD's - no we don't have Ipods for our kindergartner and third grader. But some of their friend's do (why the parents want to start such a trend so young, is beyond me). But we do love Disney CD's, Hannah Montana and High School Musical - of course we have those, but Jonas Brothers and others from the Disney marketing machine are a big hit!
Tickets to Fun Events - whether it's Disney, a concert, the circus - make memories instead of stuffing the toy box with more Chinese imports. We had circus tickets last year and it was a big hit!
Board Games - always fun for everyone to have several new ones to play after Christmas.
Do you have more ideas - post them in the comments ;)

yes we are definately all about educational materials and cds and dvds this year.
If I forgot anything that y'all readers think is good, email me and I'll post it!
I'm going to forget about toys and buy children's books printed in the USA. Authorhouse is a publishing company that prints all their books in the USA. I just purchased a new children's book, LADYBUG BABY BUG, from www.barnesandnoble.com that's printed in the USA. My son loves the bold, primary colors used on the whimsical illustrations and it's great for emerging readers. By buying children's books printed in the USA, you are staying away from the risk of future toy recalls and providing children with a positive educational alternative.
Yes, books are the best gift, aren't they...along with your time to read to the children ;)
